Our Mission

The mission of the facility is to protect the community and the environment. This is accomplished by ensuring that the pipes that transports wastewater from homes and business and all treatment plant equipment is properly maintained. We also perform daily monitoring of all the plant processes to ensure that the wastewater leaving the plant meets the requirements of the state.

Protecting Our Water Resources

Sun Prairie has provided some form of wastewater treatment since around 1916. There have been 4 major upgrades to the treatment facilities due to growth of the city and to comply with some of the most stringent effluent limits imposed by the Department of Natural Resources in the country.

The city’s current wastewater treatment facility was originally built in 1982 and was upgraded in both 2005 and 2020. The facility is state-of-the-art, achieving 99% removal of phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, total suspended solids, and organic waste (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) daily before discharging the treated water to the Koshkonong Creek.

Peak Performance Awards

The Peak Performance Awards recognize NACWA (National Association of Clean Water Agencies) member facilities for excellence in permit compliance. Gold Awards are presented to facilities with no permit violations for the entire calendar year, and Silver Awards are presented to facilities with no more than 5 violations per calendar year.

The City of Sun Prairie’s wastewater treatment facility received the Gold Award for 2022 and the Silver Award for 2023.
