SPHS Foundations of Democracy
The Sun Prairie Historical Library and Museum is working with Sun Prairie High School teachers, Steve Braatz, Marsha Heuer and Caryn Peters on an oral history project about Sun Prairie’s downtown business district. The approximately 150 Foundations of Democracy class students have been divided into small groups and have been given the assignment to contact businesses within the Business Improvement District (BID) to request that the businesses participate in the project.

For businesses that agree, the students will conduct research on the businesses to learn about present day and former businesses at the assigned location. The Museum has provided the Foundations of Democracy students with over 100 photos of downtown Sun Prairie businesses all the way back to the early 1900’s so that the students can compare current businesses and buildings with what the locations looked like in years past.

Looking for Photos
The Museum is always looking for photos of the Sun Prairie area and if you have photos of downtown businesses (old and new) that you are willing to donate or share with the Museum, please contact Museum Curator, Pete Klein at 608-837-2915 or email the museum.

Also, the Foundations of Democracy teachers are inviting business owners and the general public to share stories of downtown businesses (now and then) with the classes on Tuesday, December 18. If you are able to participate, please contact 1 of the teachers in advance (contact information is below). Business owners will be scheduled between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and the public between 8 a.m. and 1:18 p.m.
