Cop on a Rooftop – Special Olympics of Wisconsin

Sergeant Ryahn Smith assisted in facilitating the 2022 Special Olympics Wisconsin Cop on a Rooftop with Dunkin event on Friday, August 19th. The event was a wonderful success bringing community members together with their public safety personnel from the PD, FIRE and EMS as well as Dane County Sheriff Deputies. The community poured into the Dunkin Donuts lot both via the drive-thru as well as on foot, and with their generosity and support, $2,978.61 was raised to benefit Special Olympics of Wisconsin.

Sweet Corn Festival

The Sun Prairie Police Department participated in and staffed each event and night of the 2022 Cornfest. Officers assisted with the parade and staffed areas of the festival grounds during each night of the week. With the weather bringing on and off rain this year, there were some lower attendance periods, but all of that changed on Sunday. Heavy crowds and traffic were observed on Sunday, but people remained calm for the most part and were able to enjoy the festivities. Very few disturbances were observed or reported, and no arrests needed to be made. Officers found opportunities they could to interact with our community members and have some fun, as well. Thousands of attendees poured in, and that meant thousands of junior police officers were roaming the grounds as well proudly displaying their sticker badge!

Kelly trained at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and holds a PhD in Theatre from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Fathering: Challenges, Benefits, Barriers

Tuesday, September 20 6:30-7:30 p.m. Library Community Room

More men today are actively involved in the lives of their children than they would report was the case for their own fathers, however, our social fabric is still slow in its full integration of fathers. Our organizations are challenged in their appreciation of the role of fathers, and even in the family, fathers face significant barriers. What are some of the father related, organization orientation, and relational factors that could enhance the contribution of fathers beyond child support?

Presented by Alvin Thomas, a clinical trained psychologist focused on the risk and protective factors for African-American boys, the positive development of youth, and the engagement of fathers in care of their children. He is an alumni fellow of the International Max Planck Research School on the Life Course, and the Health Equity Leadership Institute. He has presented his work internationally and has earned numerous awards including the Center for the Education of Women Scholarship.   (Thomas is the first man to receive an award from the Center in its 40-year history.) This program is part of a partnership with the UW-Speaker's Bureau.

Sun Prairie Utilities

Each year, more than 2,000 community-owned utilities, like Sun Prairie Utilities, across the nation observe Public Power Week during the first full week of October. Public Power Week is a celebration of these not-for-profit electric utilities that proudly serve the electric power needs of about 40 million Americans - or almost 15 percent of electricity consumers.

Every public power system is different due to its community's population, geography, climate, natural resources, economy, and local government structure. However, all public power systems have in common their purpose: to provide adequate, reliable, not-for-profit electricity at a reasonable price with proper protection of the environment.

Join us in celebrating Public Power Week, October 2-8. In appreciation of our customers, we’re providing the following opportunities to celebrate Public Power in Sun Prairie:

Monday October 3rd - Sunshine Supper 5pm-6pm- SPU Staff will be sponsoring and serving dinner at the Sunshine Building; this is a drive-thru event. Conservation item giveaway will be included.

Wednesday October 5th  - Storytime at Sun Prairie Public Library @3:30pm- SPU Lineman will be reading “If I Were a Lineworker”.  A bucket truck will be on site for “touch a truck”. This event will be held outside, weather permitting.

Thursday October 6th – SPU Facility Tour 9am-1pm- To meet the demands of our growing community, SPU is planning to build a new facility. Join us at 125 W. Main Street for a tour of the current space and provide important feedback. Light refreshments will be served.
