Curbside Recycling

Do you have questions about residential curbside recycling? Check out these short videos full of best practices created by our recycling program contractor Pellitteri Waste Systems. Pellitteri Waste Systems - About Us | Madison Wisconsin. A few quick tips from these videos:

  • Aluminum cans – empty, but don’t crush or flatten. The system will identify a crushed two-dimensional can as paper, which contaminates the paper stream.
  • Bagging Recycling – Consider not bagging, but if you do use a clear bag. If a black bag is used, the sorters have to assume it contains trash and it will be thrown into the waste stream.
  • Food & Liquids –when in doubt, throw it out. If food or liquid can’t be removed from a container, throw it into the trash. Pizza boxes can be recycled, but sections with grease should be separated and thrown away.

Downtown Sun Prairie to host 2022 Great Race lunch stop on June 23

The Downtown Sun Prairie Business Improvement District is pleased to announce that the event organizers for the Great Race have selected Downtown Sun Prairie as a Lunch Stop on June 23 as part of the 2022 Hemmings Motor News tour, presented by Hagerty Drivers Club.

The Great Race, the world’s premiere old car rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles to town for the event, with the first car rolling in to Angell Park’s south entrance starting at 11:45 a.m. The event will begin in Warwick, Rhode Island, on June 18, and will finish in Fargo, North Dakota, on June 26.

“We are excited to come to be coming to Sun Prairie and visit the historic Angell Park,” Rac 1909 Buick racer attacks the California hillse Director, Jeff Stumb said.

Teams and cars from Japan, England, Australia, Germany, Canada, and every corner of the United States will converge in Rhode Island in mid-June, with vintage automobiles dating back as far as 1916. The 9-day, 2,300-mile adventure will travel to 19 cities in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota. “There are more than 500 people just in our entourage from all around the world,” Stumb said.

The event began in 1983 by Tom McRae and it takes its name from the 1965 movie, The Great Race, which starred Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood, and Peter Falk. The movie is a comedy based on the real life 1908 automobile race from New York to Paris. In 2004, Tony Curtis was the guest of the Great Race and rode in his car from the movie, the Leslie Special.

The Great Race is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and a navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins.

Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and look at the cars for several hours. It is common for kids to climb in the cars for a first-hand look.

Cars built in 1974 and earlier are eligible, with most entries having been manufactured before World War II. In the 2021 Great Race a 1932 Ford won the event from San Antonio, Texas, to Greenville, S.C. The 2022 winners will receive $50,000 of the $150,000 total purse.

“When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant festival,” Stumb said. “Last year we had several overnight stops with more than 10,000 spectators on our way to having 250,000 people see the Great Race during the event.”

Parking will be offered at Angell Park’s upper lot, located off of Hwy N/Grove Street, and at the Sun Prairie East High School for $5.00, cash only. There will be live music and a variety of local food vendors at Angell Park. Angell Park is walking distance to unique shops and restaurants that the Great Race cars will drive past on their way out of town.

After the Great Race, Downtown Sun Prairie is hosting Classic Cars from 5-8 p.m. It is a free, family friendly event that will have free balloon sculptures for kids, and entertainment by Elvis impersonator Tony Rocker, in addition to cars being on display on Market Street.

Downtown Sun Prairie’s Lunch Stop event is presented by Downtown Sun Prairie. The Presenting Sponsor is the Bank of Sun Prairie, other sponsors include The Loft at 132, Frank Beverage Group, Beans N Cream Coffeehouse, Wilde East Towne Honda and General Beer Distributors.

Finance

City’s Financial Reports Receive Major Awards

The City of Sun Prairie was recently awarded for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) for fiscal year 2020. The ACFR and PAFR are submitted to the Government Financial Officers Association (GFOA) by the city’s finance department. Members of the GFOA Special Review Committee and the GFOA Executive Board review submissions by state and local entities for the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program and the Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award Programs. These award programs recognize state and local governments of all types and sizes on their high quality reports that promote better transparency of financial management.

The ACFR is a thorough and detailed report of the city's financial condition and reports on its activities and balances for the fiscal year. This is the sixth Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its ACFR for the fiscal year ending in 2020 that has been received.

The PAFR, a more user-friendly rendering of the full annual financial report, summarizes the information from the annual financial report and presents it in a more accessible and understandable way for the general public and other interested parties without a background in finance. The 2020 report marks the city’s fifth award for its PAFR.

To receive recognition for the programs, the reports are scored based on categories such as compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and program policy, understandability, reader appeal and overall quality. If a government’s report wins an award, it will receive national recognition, along with a plaque and press release. Recipients also receive feedback on their reports for areas of improvement to take into account for the following year.

“We are elated to have received these awards for our dedication to ensuring transparency in finance,” said Kristin Vander Kooi, Finance Director.

The ACFR and PAFR continue to be excellent resources for residents to become more familiar with the City’s finances. For more information and to review the financial reports, please visit https://www.cityofsunprairie.com/318/Financial-Statements

Public Safety

Click It or Ticket Mobilization

The Sun Prairie Police Department will join thousands of law enforcement agencies for this year’s Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign, one of the nation’s most important highway safety efforts. From May 23 through June 5, 2022, Sun Prairie Police will join officers statewide and nationwide, to patrol in order to reinforce one safety message – BUCKLE UP.

The annual campaign coincides with the first summer travel holiday. As more cars are out on the roads during Memorial Day weekend, Law enforcement official are asking everyone to buckle up and stay safe. “With an increased number of cars flooding the roads for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, it’s vital that we get the word out about the importance of wearing a seat belt,” Sgt. Lefeber said.

Currently, 89% of Wisconsin motorists wear safety belts. The 11 percent who fail to buckle up accounted for 43% of all the drivers and passengers killed in Wisconsin traffic crashes in 2020.

Wisconsin’s primary seat belt law, in place since 2009, allows law enforcement to stop and cite motorists for failing to wear a seat belt. Drivers can also be cited for every unbuckled passenger in their vehicle. Penalties are higher for transporting unrestrained children. Failure to fasten a seat belt is among the most common traffic violations in Wisconsin, resulting in more than 27,000 traffic convictions last year.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019, 55% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m.–5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts. That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is nighttime enforcement.

“We aren’t handing out tickets for the thrill of it. Wearing a seat belt is not only the law, it can save your life,” Sgt. Lefeber said. “If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits. Help us spread this lifesaving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction. Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to remember to buckle up every trip, no matter how long.”

Known as the province of Limon, we'll travel deep into the country's southern Caribbean region to meet the Bribri, Costa Rica's largest indigenous population. We'll learn about their ancient culture, experience firsthand the old-fashion way to produce chocolate, and discover the Bribri's expertise about the healing power of medicinal plants.  This event will be a 'live-in-real-time' tour, led by experienced travel guide and proprietor of Enjoy Virtual Tours Costa Rica, Alejandro Cano Ospiro. This virtual event will be held via Zoom. To receive the Zoom log in information, visit our Events Calendar at https://sunprairie.librarymarket.com

Battling Injustice in Mississippi

Wednesday, June 22 6:30-7:30 p.m., Library Community Room

We are pleased to welcome Eddie and Mary Sue Short, two Freedom Fighters in the Civil Rights Movement during the pressure cooker of violent white resistance: 1960's Mississippi. Despite receiving death threats and being jailed several times, they remained committed to the cause. Their story was recently chronicled in the book, “A Small Town Rises”. Copies of the book will be available for purchase following the presentation. Registration for this program is not required, but recommended if you would like to receive a confirmation email the day before the event.
