I need to talk to an inspector. When are they available?

Inspection staff are available weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The amount of time inspectors spend in the office is offset by the number of inspections that need to be done on any given day. Most inspectors are available at the beginning of the day and shortly after lunch or by appointment. Call 608-825-1184 to speak with an inspector or to schedule an appointment. Inspectors are not available on weekends. 

Is it possible to schedule plan reviews in advance or are they reviewed in the order in which they are received?

 Plans are reviewed in the order they are received.

Can I get a permit at a Building Inspection District Office? 


 The City of Sun Prairie Building Inspection Division has moved to an online permitting system.

How do I know if permits are open on my property? 

 

You can check for open permits by calling Building Inspection at 608-825-1184 or emailing buildinginspection@cityofsunprairie.com.


Does a contractor need to be licensed to do work on my home?


Yes, Contractors need to be licensed per State of Wisconsin SPS 305 and State Statutes.


What kind of work can I do on my own home? 


By State Statute a person that owns and occupies a single-family detached dwelling may perform work that they are knowledgeable in and know the applicable codes and standards. 


If you own a home and do not reside there, such as a rental property, you must hire licensed contractors.


What is a Certificate of Occupancy, where can I get one, and what documents will I need? 


A Certificate of Occupancy is a document issued by a governing body typically giving permission to occupy that space for the use listed on the Certificate. To obtain a Certificate of Occupancy you would submit an Application for Occupancy.


Can a dumpster be in front of my apartment building? 


Dumpster Enclosures and Dumpsters shall be located at a pre-approved location through the Planning Department.
