John Murray was elected Mayor of Sun Prairie in April 2011 after serving two terms on the Sun Prairie Common Council representing the fourth aldermanic district. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin Madison with a degree in Economics and Political Science, Mayor Murray has over 20 years of professional experience in public policy and communications.
Mayor Murray got his first taste of politics right out of college as a messenger with the Wisconsin State Assembly. This experience sparked his interest in both politics and policy. Since then, Murray has been a policy and political advisor to several top legislative leaders, including former Speaker of the Assembly Mike Huebsch and former Senate Majority Leader Dale Schultz. While working in Washington DC, Murray was Chief of Staff for Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan and Director of the Office of State-Federal Relations for Wisconsin Governor Scott McCallum. He also did business development and marketing for Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich.
In 2007, Murray ran for local elected office in Sun Prairie to have a voice in the decisions affecting his neighborhood and community.
Just prior to being elected Mayor, Murray was Common Council President. During his time on the Council, he was a member of the Public Works and Personnel Committees, the Sun Prairie Library Board, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Commission. He also chaired the Ad Hoc Committee on Economic Development, was President of the Sun Prairie Economic Development Council, and recently completed a three-year term on the Capital Area Regional Planning Commission (CARPC).
Murray works for the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing overseeing public policy and communications. He is 44 years old, married to wife Denise, has two sons, and lives in the Providence neighborhood.
